Working with Kids

6 May

I know how blessed I am to have a job, and how blessed I am to have an awesome family.

1 Wife + 1 Son +1 Daughter = Very Happy Jason

Something that I am learning and learning how to balance is working with kids, while my wife if working as well.  Today, Kathy is scheduled to work 7am-7pm (rough shift for sure, please pray for her).  So I am home with the kids for the morning, we have a babysitter for a bit, and then I will be home again in the afternoon.

One of the great things about my job is that I can do my work from anywhere.  I can work in my home, I can work at a coffee shop, I can even work while standing in line at the bank thanks to my iPhone.

The hardest place to work is at home.  Because my kids are there.  They are adorable, and fun and require my attention all the time.  I feel bad working at home because they don’t really understand that I’m working.  It’s not really fair to them.  As they get older this should get easier.

But right now, Judah wants to sit on my lap. so . . .

There is one person . . .

9 Mar

Who fills me with joy

Who deals with my insecurities

Who loves me no matter what

Whose opinion always matters to me

Who makes me laugh everyday

Who amazes me with her commitment to get the best for our family

Whose smile is all I need to remember how lucky I am

Who I am always more than happy to lose at board games to

Who I miss throughout the day

Who speaks truth to me all the time

Who lets me be who I am

Who believes in me

Who I would do anything for

Who makes the best meatloaf

Who helps me be better at everything

Whose blog I read all the way through, and am challenged every time.

Kathy thanks for being a source of joy and a great blessing in my life.  I thank God everyday for all you are and do and that he guided our two paths together.

Thank you for being an amazing mom.  Judah got your desire to be close and cuddle, and Joss got your go, go, go life.  I love them both mainly because they remind me of you.

You are amazing!

Legacy

27 Aug

Today I am working on an upcoming sermon for Sunday Morning – October 19th to be precise.  I’ll be preaching out of Genesis 49, which is a huge scripture for understanding the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures, and some of the New Testament.

What Jacob says to his sons in Genesis 49 will impact their families for generations.  And most of what Jacob says is in relations to his sons’ actions, the things that they have done.  So it got me thinking about legacy, and how important what we do today is for our tomorrows.  I think Jacob was probably very sad giving these prophetic words to his sons, because it kind of shows how Jacob himself failed as a father.  Jacob, was blessed with 11 sons and 9 of them did some pretty horrible things.  Somewhere along the line Jacob neglected his role of instruction and correction. Read Genesis 35.22 – Jacob did nothing in response to Reuben’s actions.

It’s easier to just let things go, to let your kids do their thing, but we can’t do that.  I have a two year old, and I clearly see at this point that I can’t just let him do whatever he wants because he would end up a serial killer (he’s super cute but we are all depraved sinners).  So I need to work on instruction and discipline, I need to be his spiritual leader, I need to be his pastor, and it’s so hard to always be on like that.  But that’s what our family needs.

Jacob’s words in Genesis 49 are not just his sons’ legacies, they His Legacy.  At the end of the Chapter Jacob dies, and I can see why, It must have been really hard to realize that he was a horrible father in a lot of ways.

So dads let’s not let that happen to us.  Let’s build our legacy in such a way that on our death bed we die with a smile on our face, because we have family around us, and we can be proud and happen with the direction that their lives took.  We know that our name will be remembered kindly, and our sons and daughters names too.

Going All The Way – Review

30 Jan

In Keeping with my read one book at a time.  I finished the Shack and then Promptly finished up Going All The Way, by Craig Groeschel (Lead Pastor of LifeChurch.tv).

I’ve had this book for some time, and I had started it before the new year, and so that’s why I was able to finish it so Closely to The Shack.

Going All The Way is a well written look at relationships and priorities.  And I liked the title so much that I am going to Use it for a series that we are launching this week.  (Full Disclosure is a good thing.)  It starts at looking at what truly is important as people prepare for marriage, and then progresses to finding the right person, setting the right priorites, commited to each other, true intimacy with your spouse, and a lifelong covenant.

Great book.  Having heard Craig’s sermons before he writes just like he preaches, so the book goes quickly, and really gets to the point.  I never felt like he was drawing out the point for no good reason.  There are a lot of things that are applicable to Middle School and High School students.

Having been a 12 year old boy before, I wish I would have had a resource like this to help me set my priorities better.  Growing up I was told that sex is bad, girls are danger and don’t do anything stupid.  But somehow I missed, or it wasn’t really presented, that our relationship with God should be our top Priority.  It wasn’t until my Senior Year in High School that I was convinced of this point.

So Youth Pastors, College Pastors, Singles Pastors, Pastors Pastors, I would recommend you pick up this book.

Hello Again

23 Jan

Well it’s been a while since I posted.  Couple of factors went into that, 1)busy 2)sick.  So that’s that.

But some pretty cool and exciting things have happened.  our student ministry hosted an event called beyond::afterhours.  And that went really well.  We had 30 students show up and we had a great ole’ time.  I’ve heard a lot of very positive feedback on the event itself, both from students and parents. So Rock On!

Probably the highlight from that evening was the chance that I had to talk to a student who had a lot of great questions about God, Jesus and the church.  Any time I can have a real honest conversation with people about faith matters it’s a reminder for why I am in youth ministry.  There is nothing greater than changing someone’s perceptions of Christians.  :o )

So Friday night was great.  But on Saturday I started feeling pretty crummy with a cold and I’m just now starting to feel better, dayquil helps.  But Judah and I both have the same cold, so I’m hoping we can both kick it quickly.

Speaking of Judah he has learned the High Five-Pound It Combination.   He automatically goes to the Pound it after any kind of high five motion, so be ready, don’t leave him hanging.

I’ve set up a place outside of my house where I can work.  It’s at an undiclosed location, so don’t ask me where.  But just having that place brings joy to my life, I feel like I have a little bit more seperation between my home and work which is really valuable for my sanity.

And last night I got an early Birthday, Valentine’s Day, Anniversary, LaborDay, present.  Thanks to my parent’s contribution and kathy’s permission I was able to get an iPhone.  And it’s pretty stinking awesome.  I’m still learning how to make it the better tool for me to get stuff done, but I love the SMS conversation feature, visual voicemail, and mail and internet.  The recent updates where you can customize your home page are great too.  So I’m in geek heaven right now.

Something odd happened too recently.  I denied my first comment.  I believe in freedom of speech, but I also believe in courtesy.  And I received a comment that was just mean for no reason.  And I just couldn’t leave it be.  It felt weird, but at the same time like it was the right thing for me to do.  As the creator of this blog I feel like I should create a culture around it and part of that culture is respect for other people.  Especially groups.  So I hope I haven’t come across as disrespectful to anyone, but in the future I hope that we are all civil and respectful.

On the plus side, both Matt Casper and Jim Henderson have left comments on my book review for Jim and Casper go to Church.  And that was cool.  It’s always neat to have the author respond in some way to your thoughts.

So that’s a lot of stuff but I had to get it all out there.  Have a great day
