I love johnny cash, what do you think this video is saying?
Good Weekend
13 NovWell this was a wonderful weekend.
Mikey and Lani got hitched yesterday, great ceremony, we had African food which was unique and delicious. Congrats to them, I hope they enjoy their gifts and their honeymoon, I think they are cruising. I don’t know.
I also came into contact with the New Clapton CD, on the road to Escondido. This album features J.J. Cale who’s songs Clapton has been covering for years so they finally teamed up. Good stuff, bluesier than his last record. So that was good.
Also Sting’s new album Songs from the Labrynth, which is Lute Music. Really beautiful music but for some reason he reads letters or something from this original Lute Player, but it turns out to be creepy. Sting, just sing, and don’t make every album a lute album. Please!
Also Kathy and I saw Stranger Than Fiction, which I loved. I thought it was a great movie, really smart, Will Ferrell was great funny but also very real. I would recommend it.
You’ve Come A Long Way
28 SepSo everyone who knows me knows that I totally dig U2. But they weren’t always the great showmen that they are today. for all you aspirring rock stars take heart, you might suck today, but in 20 years you could be a globe-trotting rock star.
enjoy
Modern Psalm – Oh My God by Jars of Clay
20 SepWell I love jars of clay, great musicians, and great song writers. This song moved me deeply, and I read over the lyrics and it seemed to come right out of the book of Psalms.
here are the lyrics
Oh my God, look around this place
Your fingers reach around the bone
You set the break and set the tone
Flights of grace, and future falls
In present pain
All fools say, “Oh my God”
Oh my God, Why are we so afraid?
We make it worse when we don’t bleed
There is no cure for our disease
Turn a phrase, and rise again
Or fake your death and only tell your closest friend
Oh my God.
Oh my God, can I complain?
You take away my firm belief and graft my soul upon your grief
Weddings, boats and alibis
All drift away, and a mother cries
Liars and fools; sons and failures
Thieves will always say
Lost and found; ailing wanderers
Healers always say
Whores and angels; men with problems
Leavers always say
Broken hearted; separated
Orphans always say
War creators; racial haters
Preachers always say
Distant fathers; fallen warriors
Givers always say
Pilgrim saints; lonely widows
Users always say
Fearful mothers; watchful doubters
Saviors always say
Sometimes I cannot forgive
And these days, mercy cuts so deep If the world was how it should be, maybe I could get some sleep
While I lay, I dream we’re better,
Scales were gone and faces light
When we wake, we hate our brother
We still move to hurt each other
Sometimes I can close my eyes,
And all the fear that keeps me silent falls below my heavy breathing,
What makes me so badly bent?
We all have a chance to murder
We all feel the need for wonder
We still want to be reminded that the pain is worth the thunder
Sometimes when I lose my grip, I wonder what to make of heaven
All the times I thought to reach up
All the times I had to give
Babies underneath their beds
Hospitals that cannot treat all the wounds that money causes,
All the comforts of cathedrals
All the cries of thirsty children – this is our inheritance
All the rage of watching mothers – this is our greatest offense
Oh my God
Oh my God
Oh my God
Good Music
13 SepWell I gotta admit I love music, I love a good song, I love a great band. And I need to pass on a gem of an artist that I have recently come across. I read a book called Body Piercing Saved My Life. I blogged about it somewhere. But one of the artist mentioned was Sufjan Stevens, brilliant stuff. You must go check it out.
Bob Dylan #1
7 SepSo I haven’t yet acquired Bob Dylan‘s new ablum Modern Times, but I have wanted to get it since i knew he was making it. I loved Time Out of Mind and Love And Theft, and this album so far sounds just as good. But it’s also busted onto #1 first time for Bob since 1976. Way to go Bob.
Friday Afternoon
4 AugWell It’s friday afternoon, and I really don’t have much to write about. Camp is pretty much in the bag. Work is pretty dead, and I have .5 hours left until I get to go home.
Tonight I will be going to a Worship Concert by my friend Chris Ritchie. Chris and I were in a band together and you can read about it here. Planning on this evening has brought back a lot of memories about the band and traveling and playing with the band and other bands. Those were good times.
One of my favorite groups to play with was wideawake. These guys a awesome, and if you are looking for good music on itunes go get these guys. They’re great. It’s cool to see how well they’ve done. We played shows together where they couldn’t even give us gas money, and now they are rockin’ the austin scene pretty hard.
They’ve even released a single to benefit the LiveStrong Foundation. You can read about it on their site, but that song was played when Lance Armstrong appeared on the tonight show. Pretty cool, pretty cool.
The first time I saw Wideawake we were playing at a Christian Battle of the Bands. They were called Common Thread back then. They were definitely the best group there. So from Dightmans Book Store in Tacoma to the WB, MTV, and Livestrong, it’s been a journey for them and I’m excited to see where they end up.
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
23 NovSo I just purchased the new U2 album, and I must say that I am in love with it. This album has a depth of emotion that I haven’t heard in popular music for a long time.
As a way to get my self in the mode for this new album I listened to every u2 album, and I came to a shocking realization. All That You Can’t Leave Behind is really not a great album. Yes it has a lot of great songs, but it lacks a certain unifying quality to all the songs, “New York”, “Peace on Earth” and “Wild Honey” stand out as tracks that are just so different from the rest of the album that it diminishes the flow of listening. They are not bad songs but they just don’t fit.
I am pleased to say that Atomic Bomb does not have that problem, the band really put together a great unified album that tugs at the heart and soul of the listener.
Right of the top I knew this album was going to be great even if Bono can’t count.
Now I can’t wait for the Tour that I am going to make every effort to attend.
Faith Enough
7 Septoday was a long day, but it’s over. No major events but I thought I would post the words to a great song that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
Faith Enough – Jars of Claythe ice is thin enough for walkin’
the rope is worn enough to climb
throat is dry enough for talkin’
world is crumblin’, but i know why
world is crumblin’, but i know why
storm is wild enough for sailing
bridge is weak enough to cross
this body frail enough for fighting
i’m home enough to know i’m lost
home enough to know i’m lost
Chorus:
it’s just enough to be strong
in the broken places, in the broken places
it’s just enough to be strongshould the world
rely on faith tonight
land unfit enough for planting
barren enough to conceive
poor enough to gain the treasure
enough a cynic to believe
enough a cynic to believe
[CHORUS]
confused enough to know direction
sun eclipsed enough to shine
be still enough to finally tremble
see enough to know i’m blind
see enough to know i’m blind
[CHORUS x 2]
should the world rely on faith tonight
should the world rely on faith tonight
tonight
tonight
tonight
tonight
tonight
good stuff
