Accept No Imitations

11 Jun

One of the things that Hurt (the book).  Talks about is authenticity.  Over the past few years the biggest lesson that I have learned in ministry is be yourself.  God has called you to be you.

Don’t try to imitate others, and don’t compare yourself to other people.  Can you learn from them?  Absolutely, but Don’t try to be someone you were never meant to be.

Teenagers have a keen Bull Detector.  And they know when you are fake and in authentic.  Our greatest model of ministry, Jesus, was the most authentic person to ever live.  That’s our model.  So be you!

All Marketers are Liars – Review

17 Apr

Seth Godin is a marketing genius.  This book is a reminder that Marketing is story telling, and the stories we tell need to be true and authentic.  We can’t tell other people’s stories and if our stories are false we will be found out.

As a church leader, it is imperative that the we tell first off, the Greatest Story, the Gospel.  And it’s not enough to just tell it, we need to live it out.  And then the stories that we tell about transformed lives are our most important assest for spreading the gospel.

There were quite a few quotes that I wrote down in my moleskine that I thought were particularly powerful, and reminded me about everything that is wrong with the health and wealth and prosperity gospels.

I think even though church leaders are not by definition and title, marketers this is still a valuable book and a great reminder that we need to be authentic in our message.  Thank you mister Godin.

Last night of Masks

26 Oct

So tonight was the last night of the Masks Series.  And it was a good time.  Since we’ve moved over to Thursday Nights we have had quite a varied group of attenders.  It’s funny to see who has been there every week and who hasn’t.  Pretty interesting.

If you feel so inclined you can download tonights audio here.

Last week of the Masks Series

22 Oct

This Thursday is the last in our Masks serious.  The whole thing has been about trying to live authentic lives, and thus to take off our masks.  This Thursday we are going to talk about “Blessed are the Uncool.”  The title is borrowed from a book called “Blessed are the Uncool.”

We are going to look at the Beattitudes and how Jesus’ definition of blessed is different than the worlds.  In truth it’s different than most Christians.  I am praying that this week will be a great time where we see ourr utter dependence on Jesus and him alone and when we trust him we don’t have to try to “cool.”

I’m excited about this.

At the same time in transit we are talking about How the world views Christians and how we can change those perceptions as individuals.  Good stuff!

Masks

18 Oct

at >>beyond>> we have been talking about being authentic during our current series masks.  Last week I felt went really well.  Considering that last week was our first week in a new place we did all right.  I am excited for where things are going to go.

But the whole principal behind the series is that we all wear masks at some point or another.  last week we talked about how we wear masks to cover over our shame and how Jesus’ grace allows us to take off the masks.  Jesus removes all shame.  That’s awesome.  I love that I can come to Jesus and I don’t have to wear a mask because he knows me through and through.

I was watching my son this morning.  He likes to hide right now so he will put his toy baskets over his head thinking that he is hiding.  But he’s standing right in the middle of the living room.  That’s how we are when we think we are hiding from God.  He sees right through our masks.  So stop trying to hide.  Just be real with Him!

I just thought I would share that.  Have a good one.
